Manchester United took another blow after captain Nemanja Vidic could potentially be forced to spend time resting after sustaining a knee injury.
The centre-back was in an incident with FC Basel’s Marco Streller during the first half of the 2 – 1 loss to the Swiss team, which saw him carried off the pitch with severe knee pain after twisting the joint. He was seen using crutches as he left the grounds after the match.
The level of his injury has not yet been confirmed, but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson stated: “We don’t know with Vidic, we think it’s certainly a medial ligament [injury].”
The incident occurred during a disheartening night for the Reds which not only saw them lose the game but also lose their place in the Champions League. United’s local rivals Manchester City were also knocked out of the contest and both teams will play in the Europa League instead
If Vidic is found to have injured his knee ligament, the Serbian ace may be out for up to four months.
